What in gay hell?

Michael Douglas as Liberace?

Seems Soderbergh missed a golden opportunity to feature an up-and-comer who not only physically resembles The Man herself, but… y’know…has a certain carriage and demeanor perfect for the role. Ladies and gentlemen… Ross the Intern.

A great injustice has been done.

“Drill, baby, drill!” indeed. And stuff.

Another reason to love the season.

I’m not much of a beer drinker; I’d rather enjoy a smart cocktail. When I do drink beer, it really betrays my roots as a Midwestern farm kid as I tend to enjoy most the beers that can be easily acquired in any Casey’s General Store, basically Bud Light & Miller Chill.

But every autumn, the good folks at Boulevard bring out their best offering, Bob’s ‘47. It’s in stores now. Pierpont’s has it on tap and Tower Tavern will soon. Cheers!

Not nearly as fun as the last time I got greeked.

(Ladybird joins the clean-plate club)

The Greek Fest doesn’t have a patch on the Kosher Fest. The food’s alright, I guess, though not all that exciting. I’ve had better gyros at that weird little we-serve-everything place in Crown Center. The salad was one of the more dreary Greek salads I’ve ever had the displeasure of eating with browning lettuce and what, to my palate, was a pretty insipid feta.

There were definite highlights, though. The tiropita and spanakopita were quite good and the dolma was one of the best I’ve ever had.

I forgot to get a pic of the plate before I started since I’d skipped breakfast and was eager to dig in, but we were able to show some restraint before decimating the dessert box.

The worst part of the experience: the music. It’s shrill, way too loud and nearly inescapable. It was absolutely impossible to hold a conversation in the dining tent.

Best part? The kok was good, but the real winner of the day was the coconut baklava.

If I go back next year, I’ll just swing by and pick up some dolmas and a couple of takeout containers filled with desserts.

Um, can Sarah come out and play?

Tell me why Governor Palin can’t campaign on her own again? I mean, Crazy Joe DeV…Biden is stumping on his own all over the country, yet Palin continues to cling to John McCain’s jacket.

I know she has to brush up on foreign policy and stuff, though when it comes to learning things like the difference between Sunni & Shia sects, I hope she consults a more reliable source. And I know she’s getting crash-course at the “foot of the master” on matters of national security, but she’s got that jazzy “thanks, but no thanks line” line on her (final, maybe) position on the famed Bridge to Nowhere. And we mustn’t forget how mocking anyone who ever cared enough about their community to actively work to change it is huge red meat for the Republican base (though in the strictest sense, activating the call tree to bring together a few like minds to harass doctors and patients at family-planning clinics, or getting a six-pack and a couple of friends to drive around town with you so you can yell “get outta my country, spick” at people who a) may or may not be of Latin descent and b)may or may not be American citizens IS community organizing of a sort).

So why can’t she come out and play by herself? I suspect its because the McCain campaign realizes that as soon as she starts making her own way in the mean world, the fundie crowds will follow her like a flock of anxious birds hoping and praying she’ll say something to confirm their belief that she’ll do her part to bring the Rapture just a lil bit closer, leaving John Sidney McCain III to play the VFW halls and high school gymnasiums to nearly tens of sleepy elderly supporters.

I think it’ll be awhile before the Governor is allowed out on her own.

I’d forgotten how much I love this time of year.

I had every intention of blogging in a half-assed fashion about the Greek fest this evening, and am quite excited about Sarah Palin’s Pentecostal past & present (I think HSWG said it best: This bitch is crazier than a shit-house rat!), but man, I had an awesome evening. The weather has dropped into the low 50’s here in KC and while not technically fall yet, I’m all caught up in my autumn rituals. This evening I made a pot of chili, which The Husband and I enjoyed while watching The Rachel Maddow Show (see below). Then I lit some scented candles from 5b and poured a snifter of brandy and we settled in for The Closer. Autumn & winter are my favorite seasons and frankly I’ll be thrilled to have the summer behind me and am looking forward to the holidays.

That’s my girl!

Rachel Maddow, sitting in for Keith Olbermann, calls a spade a spade.

The good doctor’s first show on MSNBC this evening was a bit hit or miss. In the first 10 minutes, she relied heavily on suport from Mr. Olbermann and his interview with Barack Obama. Keith Olberman, while shilling out a great deal of red meat for his liberal followers (I stand among them), has a tendency to be pedantic and comes across as rather narcissistic. Rachel seemed a bit unsure of herself in her interaction with her MSNBC mentor, but quickly took control after shuttling KO out of the studio. There are some bits to be worked out, but I really enjoyed her “Talk Me Down” segment where Dr. Maddow, in high dudgeon regarding an issue of the day, has a guest ‘talk her down off the ledge.’ The highlight of the show was ‘It’s Pat!,’ a segment with her own “Uncle” Pat, Pat Buchanan. Despite their ideological differences, she and Buchanan really have an engaging on-air rapport and a seeming respect for each other that is totally engrossing. While is was totally awesome to see Kent Jones back in the segment-saddle covering pop culture on a show with Rachel, tonight’s installment came across as quite forced. These two have worked together in the past and I figure they’ll get a handle on their ‘television machine’ chemistry rather quickly (althought Rachel’s always uncomfortable when discussing anything to do with TV shows or celebrities; totally not her milieu). I can’t wait to see future episodes.

Dude! Awesome!

I was a big fan of Taqueria Casa Paloma in Union Station, eating their a couple of times a week, and made the journey every few months to 83rd and Metcalf to dine at La Tienda Casa Paloma when the Lara’s left the failing food court for the ‘burbs.

I was sad to hear they sold the business and even sadder to hear the new owners aren’t maintaining the quality that was a hallmark of the LTCP experience.

Now, I’m happy again.

Looks like Lisa & Bernardino moved back to his home country and have opened a B&B  in San Agustinillo, Oaxaca, Mexico. The Husband and I really enjoyed vacationing in Puerto Vallarta with Cliff & Sarah (of the Regensblog) this past winter. Now, I’m excited at the prospect of exploring points south (and by points, I mostly mean the spot on the beach where I put my towel and veg out for a week or so). AND seeing if Bernardino can make me a Michael Connor burrito and a squash blossom quesadilla for old times’ sake.

I wasn’t really planning on a winter vacation this year. Now I’m totally reconsidering.

I link therefore I am.

Some local, some not.

  • My friend Sarah’s friend Tammy offers a thoughtful expat’s view on the Republican platform and the recent convention.
  • South Hyde Park police shooting: He may have been really nice and all but confronting the po-po with a sword…well, you can’t be surprised when it doesn’t end in your favor.
  • Ploomy.com lists some regrets that it’s ok to have.
  • Video above was discovered on Ancillary Adams (and I think LA may have mentioned it to me as well).
  • Kinda excited about the new Bond No. 9 release. Mostly the house is kinda crap, though I’m a huge fan of H.O.T. Always and am developing a nose for Chinatown in spite of the initial blast reminiscent of peaches and floor wax. The dry-down is gorgeous.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have the wherewithal to get a post and some pics up from the Greek food fest. I didn’t take many and am a sucky photographer, but I have a pick of a vibrant pink kok, so that’s something I guess.
